ABET is the abbreviation for Accreditation Board for Engineering
and Technology. ABET consists of members from various engineering
professions, both academicians and engineers. The board develops
and adopts accreditation standards for the various engineering
and technology programs according to the needs of the professions.
The accreditation visits by ABET occurs every three or six years.
A fully accredited program meets a set of basic criteria established
by ABET. Even though accreditation of a program implies quality,
it does not guarantee job or graduate school opportunities.
Conversely, an unaccredited program may be of excellent quality
and students graduating under such a program will find job and
graduate school opportunities as well as those graduating from
an accredited program
